P52 - Week 26
My favorite shot for this week is this one:
This summer, we are using some of our 'down days' when the boy doesn't go to camp to squeeze in a little science time. And there's no sweeter science than making your own CANDY! Yep! We made some rock candy.
You start with super saturated sugar water and add some flavoring (grape, in our case). Then you tie (or tape) a string to a pencil and dip it into a jar with your sugar water. Remove the string and let it dry out for a day. This creates 'seed crystals' on your string. Then return the string to the solution (balanced on top of the jar w/ your pencil) and let it sit for at least a week. The longer you can wait, the better your sugar crystals will be in the end.
It's hard to wait though. So this photo was taken with just a small sample of the sugar crystals floating on the top of our solution. We siphoned out a few for a quick taste test. It was pronounced YUMMY!
Save me some!
