P52 - Week 19
Twice a year - once in the fall and then again in the spring - Forest Ridge Elementary hosts a book fair. The book fair is a wonderfully fun event for the whole family. The week leading up to the Fair, posters go up around the school, reminders and fliers are sent home. The excitement is palpable around the school as the cases of books are wheeled in to the hallways.
And then comes opening morning. You have to have a pass from the teacher or a parent present to get your first look at the Fair on Monday morning.
Lucky for Logan, we walk to class together each morning anyway. So aside from leaving home a few minutes early, we don't have to change our routine too much.
This first viewing is for browsing only. A chance to narrow down the top choices to a mere dozen or so. Then we pick an afternoon - Monday, if at all possible - and make our plans to come back for our purchases.
This year, Logan chose 2 science books to be the lead of our 'summer of science' experience. He chose a book on the elements and another chock full of do-at-home experiments for the scientifically inclined.
We spent the next few days taking turns reading aloud from the Elements book and marveling at all the cool things around us, as well as the incredible minds that have identified them.
Book fair week always rekindles the reading bug in our home, not that it ever really dies out. But the excitement of all of those new books, just waiting to be cracked open always brings a new spark to one of our favorite activities.
And this year, we got a special surprise. There was a contest to guess the correct number of books that would be sold over the course of the week. And Logan was one of 7 students to correctly guess the amount. His reward was to pick ANOTHER book from the fair. He seemed like he was about to BUST as we picked him up on Friday and just couldn't WAIT to share his exciting new read with us.
Already he's read more than half of that book aloud to us. He's finished the whole thing on his own, but he's just been so excited by it that he had to share it with the two of us as well.
All and all, another great time at the Fair! Let's have 3 cheers for the book fair! See you again in the fall!
